Re: An Orvis fly reel collection
And notice the differences between #37 and #17 both third editions
scribed lines around the handle post
gear size and teeth
and lube cap knurling, and shape(?).
John - I wonder how many first editions were actually produced, they were free spool and no stamp on the back plate. The writing looks like Charles and the Mary Kelly copy may be the one sent to F&S and Dr Henshall prior to actually going full production?
What do we call the first edition that was recalled by Charles?

Both were marked in similar locations #37 is stamped on the foot and scratched on the other parts. #17 is stamped on all parts except spool which is scratched. I've seen no numbered parts on the 2nd editions.
Royce,
Yes, it is marked on the top middle of the foot, between the pillars:

Re: An Orvis fly reel collection
It would be interesting to know what the stamped #'s indicate.
What dictates the need to stamp or scratch all the major components?
To the machinists on the board, what do the changes / modifications in two similar 3rd editions indicate?
Does anyone know who made the Orvis recent re-issue ?

Kind of an odd over stamp look on the 8. From the photo it almost looks like an O was stamped over an S.
Love those Open Face Spinning Reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco)

I agree, Tommy. The stamped number is either 160 or 180, but also possibly “10” if the middle number was simply a strike-over. I suppose I should open the 4th model and see if any corresponding numbers are scratched into the frame, as with Royce’s reel.

This weekend a researcher asked me for photos of original walnut Orvis reel boxes, and I obliged. I wanted to upload those photos here without comment as well for future researchers,

Just acquired a fresh example from the estate of
Dudley Murphy - a 2nd model with 1 / 23
and V L E on the foot. Not sure if that’s a date,
or a 1 of 23 signal.
Now to find a box.
