I have been dragged off to Orlando for the last two weeks in September for the Disney circuit with my wife and two of my kids. Any shows to attend during that time and can anyone recommend any fishing places. Freshwater/saltwater plug or fly and somewhere I can hire tackle, or should I bring my own.

Hi Stefan,
I can't believe somebody hasn't shown up here with a recommendation. Great time to go fishing. Bluewater fish are migrating south. Redfish are gathering to spawn. Even bass fishing is great.
If you have any preferences (e.g., fly fishing - estuary; blue water, etc.) post them. I can ask around and find you a guide. Any reputable guide will be able to provide you with tackle - some guides (especially bluewater) won't even let you bring your own tackle, but if you have a piece you really want to fish with, I'd say bring it.

Have not heard about redfish but I understand the pompano are starting to come around. You can try browsing and asking here:

There are other message boards on this Florida Surfcasting site where you can probably get lots of help.

Stephan,
Where in "Orlando" are you actually going to be staying. I have spent 10 Aprils in the Orlando area and have come to find several fishing/tackle places. I'll check back or you can email me when you have the location. Also what kind of reels or tackle are you looking for. Thanks.

Hi Stefan,

Last time I was in Orlando, I fished the Little Wekiva river, very beautiful--lots of gators. Not a lot of fish.

If you get a chance, drop down the coast to Anna Maria Island, absolutely beautiful place, lots of Ocean fishing and charters out of there. Small and generally not too touristy. I caught quite a few fish surf casting, had good luck with live shrimp if that's your thing. Very relaxing and fun. Kid/Wife played on the beach while I fished...not a bad way to spend a day.

Good luck.

Hi there many thanks for the response I will be staying at the Sheraton World Resort for 16 days. I mainly fly fish on small brooks, streams, rivers and reservoirs using anything from a #4 line up to a #14line and lead core shooting head (casts 50 yards+). I also go saltwater fly fishing for Sea Bass, without success so far, due mainly to the fact that it is a 3 1/2 hour drive to the suitable coast.
I trot for grayling in the winter, bait and plug fish for pike and will be going plug fishing in the Irish Sea/ Cardigan Bay in the next two months for Sea Bass
Any help and assistance would be most welcome.
This will be my 50+ trip to the States during the last 20 years and I have never fished or looked for tackle. The nearest I came was a trip to the Fulton Street Fish Market looking for Vom Hofe.

Stefan,

I live in the area you are visiting and know of several good guides only an hour away from Orlando on the west coast..Anna Maria is a good choice and large Snook can be easily caught using fly tackle..

Check out FloridaSportsman forum http://orcaonline.org/images/pixel.gif?forum?id=11 for more info on the area... or feel free to email me.

Below is a great guide I've used who has a website..

Here's a recommendation complete with photos
Jack Crevalle and some beautiful Red Drum

Fla. fishing

Hi Stefan--Merrit Island which is about 60 or 70 miles due East of Orlando
has some great red fishing as Ron Mc E. correctly called them red drum
very strong fish, not acrobatic but a lot of fun also sea 'trout' (weakfish)
they`ll take a streamer fly, that time of year you can wet wade, live shrimp can be had at local bait shops in Titusville just before going over
the bridge to Island they call the bridges 'Causeways' the Island is where
they launch the space rockets, there are the occasional Tarpon caught
also not too often tho.` Inland there is some great largemouth bass to
be caught right close to Orlando, Lake Kissimee regularly gives up many
in the 8 to 12 pound class, but spring is best using golden shiners, a large minnow, 6 to 10 inches long. About reels, is the Farlow BPS fly reel with
agate guide hard to come by ? What kind of price do they command ?

redfish have personality. You can sight-cast tailing fish in skinny water. No two fight alike. And they look at you when you're handling them. They really look at you.

Many thanks for all the information I will spend the next few weeks getting ready for MY holiday in Florida.
The Farlow BPS reel is best described as scarce, especially as many people continue to use them rather than collect them.
Value here is £50+ ($80).

Once again many thanks for all the information.

Stephen, should you get down to the Keys, it would be my pleasure to take a fellow Orca member and family fishing. Email or reply here if it can work. ReelNickels, Big Pine Key, Fl
