A plating issue

I have noticed on some reels, mainly the Portage reels (Medina, Sentrie, etc.), Four Brothers reels (Rubber City, Regal, etc.) and some Montague reels that the plating has a mottled "greyish" look. This is often on like new reels which don't appear to have been exposed to salt water or a lot of abuse. Does anyone know what causes this? :? :( :?: :?:
