The Ocean City Co.

Post by randyrev@revcar.com »

I am interested in finding out more about The Ocean City Company that manufactured Ocean City reels in Philadelphia. I am mainly interested in the history of the company and what happened to it. If someone knows where I might look or has some knowledge about this company I would appreciate some info. Thanks.

Well, Old Man Henze worked for OC as a tool & die guy, before starting Penn in the '30's.

Not much I know, but it's a start. I'd like to know more too.

I believe the most information you will find is in a back issue of the Reel News. Not sure which issue or when but I seem to remember an article on Ocean City. Maybe someone can help me remember which it was. You can order back issues if you are a member of ORCA. If you are not, joining will open up a whole world!

You might even do a search for threads on this board that discussed this subject.

Just off the top of my head: Ocean City bought out or partnered with Montague fishing rods for most of the first half of the 20th century. They also assumed some of the E. vom Hofe reel inventory, advertising Ocean City and Vom Hofe reels in catalogs during the early 40s. They were in turn bought out by True Temper in the early 1970s and then were closed by 1980.

I have been soundly reprimanded for the inaccuracies above (see the following message!)
Hope this helped.

OK Brian, I'll hit you with a wet noodle.
I covered a bit of OC history in my article about Hermos Reels in the July 2003 issue of the Reel News, and then mentioned that article in the RN that you got in the mail yesterday.
OC was incorporated in March 1923. All the officers, etc. and early reel products are mentioned in the 2003 article.
I have quite a bit of advertising material and some catalogs from OC's days of glory.
There was an article about OC's finest bait casting reels in the July issue of the Reel News.
