This is sorta cheating to put in "General" category, but it's not really a Restoration, but rather a total modification of a beat up Talbot Star, sent to me by our founder, Mike Nogay to see what might be done. The following is a pictorial, capped off by a link to a video on Dropbox that I hope you can all access. Note that if you don't have an account, you don't have to get one...there are defaults to barge ahead as a guest after each attempt to get you to sign up of get the app.
To say I’m excited to have a tournament reel designed and built by Dr. Elder is an understatement. When I asked him to build me a tournament caster my only requests were (1.) a very narrow spool; (2.) a half grasp handle; (3.) his name stamped or engraved on the reel, and (4.) serial # 001.
It’s like getting a custom made motorcycle from Orange County Choppers! Thanks, John.
Very cool John, beautiful work!
That seems like such a fun project!
One question, it almost looks too narrow to squeeze your thumb in there to hold/control the spool, is that the case?
PS - I'm new here and don't know much about these types of reels or tournament casting yet, so pardon my ignorance
WOW! Thats impressive. I knew you were good, but DAMN! Now I know you should have no problem creating a simple "brake" for my Garey reel. What you think???
Ha! Thanks again, guys! Don’t give up on me yet, Jay...I just need to add a couple more tools to the belt to make your brake! Hoping to have it before the Spring Thaw!

I am very happy to share with you these photos taken by John of the finished reel. It is marked serial no.”001T” for tournament, since John has made some earlier fly reels.
