Re: Knot lore
You lost me at twist fluctuations. I was two sheets into a fluctuation at the time.

I never got past one. But you're talking to someone who can't figure out why a square knot is called square.I was two sheets into a fluctuation at the time.

Re: Knot lore
Apparently, a square knot is the connected sum of a trefoil knot with its reflection.

It is interesting to note that it was called a reef knot until renamed in 1841 by a sea-going lawyer who may have been imbibing (speculation on my part) - Richard Henry Dana Jr.

My "granny" always used a "square" knot but I forgot why.kyreels wrote:Apparently, a square knot is the connected sum of a trefoil knot with its reflection.

For a minute there, I thought I was at a meeting of the International Guild of Knot Tyers. Yes, there is such an organization, which is almost as strange as a reel collectors club.

Re: Knot lore
A lifetime ago when I was a corpsman in the army they taught us to use a square knot for all bandages that required tying. Pull the tag end back on itself and you could pull it apart. Much easier on the patient. It didn't always work though which is why we also carried a large pair of bandage scissors.
