South Bend Finalist 1155

Post by Guest »

I recently came to own a SB Finalist 1155 fly reel- a very large reel that was maybe designed for salmon, steelhead or salt.

Details:
4" diameter;
1.5" wide; 1" wide (wide line opening);
right hand retrieve only;
burgundy with disc drag and has guard over the drag adjustment knob
very good condition- gently used.

I know and have seen many smaller (mass produced) SB models 1122 but have not seen this model.

Can any of you shed some light?

The #1155 is a reused number from an earlier SA fly reel that was considerabley smaller. The #1155 Finalist first appeared with the #1122 in 1967 and lasted about five years. In that time, other reels began to appear between the two sizes (1133, 1144, 1142). You're correct in saying you don't see as many. Although they were around more than some of the other numbers, I don't believe they were made in great numbers. New in a box it may reach $35-$40 although I believe the quality warrants a higher worth. Jim

Jim,
Thank you very much for the historical details. I have the #1122 you mentioned also and it is paired up with a great 8.5' #377 SB bamboo fly rod I refinished. Can't wait to go troutin' with it.
Not sure what to do with this #1155 monster. Seems a bit heavy too heavy to match up with the graphite steehead rods I have. They sure use a lot of steel when they made these back when. It'd take ARNOLD to cast this reel matched up with a 9'-11' bamboo steelhead rod. :?
Thanks again.
