bronze tuna door-knocker

Post by stumpstalker »

Jack Bode, of Valley Stream, Long Island, New York fished out of Freeport, New York many decades ago, and was active in fishing clubs and in tournament circles in the 1950s. He made many friends in Massachusetts when he annually took his Jersey sea skiff the ZIP to Annisquam to fish for Giant Bluefin, at a time when other tuna enthusiasts, some legendary, were operating out of that historical fishing village.

Here is a bronze tuna door-knocker, three of which he gifted to three families that I know of, including ours, back in the 1950s.

Has anyone else seen one of these?

Jack may have been the one who arranged with the foundry to have them cast.

John:

The mold is out there somewhere....

The example in the photo is, to use a phrase out of the investment field, in "strong hands".

Cool piece! Hopefully the "strong hands" have applied a little "GOOF OFF" where the shaky hand "oopsed". :D
Love those Open Face Spinning Reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco)

I have seen very similar hanging tuna door knockers. The IGFA Museum has on that has Nova Scotia on it. A good friend of mine also has one with Nova Scotia on it. His dad tuna fished in Nova Scotia back in the 1930s and again after the war. I will try and get him to send me a photo of the knocker and post it for you. Perhaps it can shed some light on your door knocker.
