Here are pictures of an Edward vom Hofe 423 6/0 salmon reel that came to me in rough shape. After a good amount of time spent on disassembly, cleaning, and hand polishing, the before and after pictures are shown.

Way to go, Ray! Nice save! Gotta thank the Vom Hofe’s for using good materials and construction that would put up with such abuse! I’m glad the reel found the right home!

Not to jump Ray’s response but I imagine what you see as white on the uncleaned reel is some old polish or crud and red is all they used. I have never been able to get an answer on what the red material is, but it is incredibly durable. If you take a toothpick and spin it in the drag marking holes and usually by tracing it through the engraving, you can wake the red up where you thought it was gone!
