Restoration of EVH 423 6/0

Here are pictures of an Edward vom Hofe 423 6/0 salmon reel that came to me in rough shape. After a good amount of time spent on disassembly, cleaning, and hand polishing, the before and after pictures are shown.

Ray, I have a good friend I coached high school wrestling with named “Wagstaff,” so that reel caught my eye. Superb work!

What did EVH or the engraver use for the red ink highlight? I assume the red was applied to a white ink primer?

Not to jump Ray’s response but I imagine what you see as white on the uncleaned reel is some old polish or crud and red is all they used. I have never been able to get an answer on what the red material is, but it is incredibly durable. If you take a toothpick and spin it in the drag marking holes and usually by tracing it through the engraving, you can wake the red up where you thought it was gone!
