Can an ORCAn have a favorite lure?

Post by Mike N »

As a reel collector, I have to admit that most mass-manufactured wooden lures really don’t interest me. But I also know that a few of us do have other fishing collectible interests. Recently, I’ve started buying a few old Wisconsin lures made by the Lauby Bait Company from 1932-1939 while the country was still in a Depression.

Anton Lauby and his children originally carved and painted these wooden lures in their garage in Marshfield, Wisconsin. The company eventually grew to up to 35 employees by 1939 when it was sold to Albert Bates. The wooden baits ranged in size from 1-1/2” fly rod baits to 7” Muskie lures.

I particularly like the way the painted wooden Lauby baits “alligator” and age, and the variety of colors they were painted.

Anyone else have a favorite vintage lure?

At the moment, I am interested in old metal. My favourite is a Livingstone blade circa 1895. It is nickel plated brass with a manually hammered golf ball surface, marked J. Livingstone, Gananoque (top center). Livingstone went on to make similar blades for Bulloch, also in Gananoque. I have had the good luck of finding one of those too, almost as rare as the Livingstone.

I have two favorite lures. Actually, I only have two lures ...and I have them because I really like them a lot.

The first is of ivory and brass and is a folk art lure ...

The second is by Phillip Geen of England. Most all of his lures are made of either silk or metal. His wood lures, like this one, are quite rare. The hook and trace were missing when I got it, so I added them.

Of course an ORCAN can have a FAVORITE Lure, especially if it is from his hometown, from his favorite company, from the pre 1910 period. REDIFOR Rod+Reel Company made my favorite reels also.

A few observations so far.

1. It does not surprise that the country’s most prolific reel historian collects “reel” lures.
2. Nor does it surprise that somehow John unearthed a Redifor lure and its box, neither of which I knew even existed.
3. Dean’s selections are the lure equivalent of vest pocket eye candy.
4. Paul never struck me as the heavy metal type, but those baits are eclipsed only by theIr intricate line swivels that each look like they took a machinist a week to make.

Been So long since I posted May not remember how. My Favorite is not ancient but a Luhr- Jensen Bass Oreno signed by the last owner, Phil Jensen before being sold to Rapala. (Even though he spelled my first name wrong)

I love to get old reels, work on them until they run as smooth as silk and the take them fishing using pre-1960 plugs, mostly surface fishing for Largemouths after dark.

Um....trick question? For actual fishing it's a Top Dog. When fishing a calm surf under birds, the action spans from incredible to insane. I always take a rig just for that lure.

For display I like Bingo's. I can't say that I have A favorite single lure.
