NASAC & NAACC tournament line spools

Post by Mike N »

I’ve spent the down time on weekends sorting through 35 years of vintage fishing collectible hoarding. Here are some early tournament casting line spools and casting weights.

The National Association of Scientific Angling Clubs (NASAC) was formed in 1907. The top row of line spools in the first photo are marked NASAC. The spool in the middle top row is for casting 5/8 oz weights.

The NASAC published its first newsletter in May, 1921 (bottom photo).

The NASAC later (1939?) changed its name to the National Association of Angling and Casting Clubs (NAACC). The five spools in the bottom two rows and the 3/8 oz. and 5/8 oz casting weights are marked NAACC. I don’t have the book, but the third of Cliff Netherton’s volumes is titled “History of the Sport of Casting, The N.A.A.C.C. Years, (1939-1960).” The NAACC later became the American Casting Association (ACA).

Please feel free to add other casting spools and weights to this thread.

Thanks for sharing Mike. Those unused line spools are really nice. I hadn't seen a couple of them before.

Nice ones Mike, I have not seen a couple of those. Here are a few of mine. I have missed out on some good ones over the years, regrettably. I don't have any labeled with the ACA, but I have seen a few different ones. I am not so proud of the Ashway old trademark, but I understand they repented and were innocent when it was made, if anyone is offended by that TM I will remove. It is history, but certainly abhorrent in some context.

Wow, Matt, super collection. Next time we are at a show together we are going to have to figure out a trade because this labeled vertical spool of yours...

Would fit perfectly on my vintage line winder...

Have a great 4th.

The Orca National Show is Sept 16, so lets rock then. I will have some spectacular stuff from a 92 yo tournament caster (deceased).

Well, it took me nearly 3 years from the date of this original thread, but I was lucky enough today to acquire this NASAC thread spool and box from an Ohio lure collector. I believe the Faber Bros. retail tag is from a Chicago sporting goods store. Matt dated this spool for me circa.1908-1910.

Nice! I rate that one of the best tournament line spool in the box I have seen.

I have since picked up and photographed way more tournament line spools. We will have an upcoming book featuring all of them.

It pays to let others know what you collect. I was lucky to pick up a second rare NASAC thread spool to fill the box.
