I need a little help from our collectors of spin cast reels. The two patents below were issued to Alvah William Fowler. Can you tell me what company actually produced these reels? And possibly show a photo of them? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Colby, do you have any evidence that either reel went into production? I can't imagine that Fowler could have convinced anyone else to make either reel. He was a retired owner of a jewelry/watch repair shop when he applied for the earlier patent.
The first patent is for a "combination" spincast and fly reel, "uncommonly simple in design and structure." Uncommon, yes;simple, no.
The second patent is supposed to provide a means of adjustably snubbing the line of a spincast reel during a cast. I'm not sure fishermen had been clamoring for that capability. And the also-not-very-simple reel was supposed to be made mostly of plastic.
If you manage to find one of these weirdos, I'd love to see it, too.
Steve,
The only "proof" I have that he made either reel are photos used in the newspaper of him holding the reels. Features of each remind me of other reels but spin casters are not my area of reel collecting. I certainly understand one example does not constitute production. He also made an anti-backlash baitcasting reel but again may have been only one example. How about it you spin cast reel collectors. Seen either one of these reels?
