Our own Jim Schottenham in NY Times
Great article in NY Times on antique fishing tackle, quoting former ORCA President Jim Schottenham.

I do expect former ORCA President Dr. Betty Barr to post in the N.Y. Times accompanying comment section a rebuttal to this statement by the NYT reporter
“Vintage fishing gear falls into a category of collectibles sometimes dubbed ‘mantiques’...”

Sometimes, if you Control-P as the page is loading, you can get it to print. Message me for more info. I don't think that PDF's can be attached to posts here.

I like “mantiques”. It takes the blame off of me for our obsession with antique tackle, when it actually is all my fault.

ORCA does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, sex, or anything else. However, just like my engineering school, there are only a smattering of the fair sex in the membership.

Re: Our own Jim Schottenham in NY Times
This reminds me of a funny story from when I was in Little League (over 50 years ago). I desperately wanted to learn to throw a curveball. So, my dad asked an ex-major league pitcher he knew from our hometown to teach me the “deuce.“ (a catcher typically puts down 2 fingers to signal a curve ball.)
After a half hour of showing me how to place my fingers on the seams, and torque load my elbow, and snap my wrist, the results were all the same: a spinner that never broke the plane.
Finally, the ex-big leaguer put his hands up in exasperation and loaded his cheek full of tobacco. Then he looked at me and said,”Hey, it works for me.” Then he got in his car and drove away.
Needless to say, I became an outfielder.
So, hey, that NYT link works for me...

BTW, anyone can sign up for a free NYT account. I have one and was able to view the article. It just limits you to a few articles per month. I have paid accounts for two other newspapers, but never pulled the trigger on the NYT.
