It's a Good Life

Post by Willis Logan »

I have a casting target set up next to my house. On a
regular basis I go out and cast for therapeutic purposes.

A lot of times when I am standing out by the sidewalk casting in front of my
house I get a visitor. The little girl next door rides her bicycle over
to check on me. She wants to make sure I am all right.

She cannot understand why this old man is fishing with no water.
Maybe some day she will tell her grandchildren about the old man who
fished with no water.

Maybe you should teach her how to cast....

You can tell her that some of the greatest casters in the world were women.

I can identify with your post, Willis. When in High School I spent countless hours in the front yard casting and regularly had cars passing by yell "catching any?". Later when my present neighborhood was populated with small children, I would immediately draw a crowd when I went out to cast in the front lawn. They enjoyed trying to catch the practice plug as it was retrieved. One day the doorbell rang and my wife answered it and it was three little girls asking if the "fisherman would come out and play". The only negative reaction I ever got was from a middle-aged man and his teenage son who rode by on bicycles and asked in a somewhat snide way if I had caught anything- followed by derogatory laughter. I immediately turned to them with a smile and said "only two suckers". They did not care for my joke and left in a huff----some folks have no sense of humor.
I love to get old reels, work on them until they run as smooth as silk and the take them fishing using pre-1960 plugs, mostly surface fishing for Largemouths after dark.
