Canadian made reels

Post by Tony Malatesta »

O.K all you ORCAN'S out there, especially all the ones that live near or have lived in Canada. I'm interested in purchasing all"Canadian" made reels from all parts of the country. Inglis & AL&W don't reely qualify because they were made under licence by US companies(but i will consider them as well) If anyone has info about such reels i would appreciate an answer as all my research is turning up nothing. Thank's! :?: :loco: :bricks: Canadian

Tony: The Granville Museum in BC had quite a collection of C anadian made reels. They have apparently closed and are selling off or have sold off the items in the museum. I don't know if their web site is still on line, but you might do a Google search and pull it up. If you get nothing, I once copied their list of reel manufacturers and can look it up for you. Just let me know if you need it.

The Granville Museum no longer has a fishing tackle section. Its inventory has been liquidated. The actual Canadian content was fairly small but better than most folks are used to seeing. The displays themselves were superb with a very fine and very substantial Hardy collection.

Should you be serious about Canadian made fishing reels, your target is very difficult. Coates, Gibbs, Peetz, Bata, Ambassadeur, Kawartha, Keates, Laurention, and about a dozen more are all out there...have fun. You would be amazed but it is very, very tough.

marked J.W. Young (certainly made in Redditch) and for merchant R&W Kerr Montreal, only made in 1939. (Only problem is, I changed the dead celluloid handle with an ivory handle from an older reel - although, I could change it back). ?
It is also the first example of a Palming Rim reel (shared by the same Young-made reel for other merchants, Ogden Smith Zephyr and Allcock Fraser), which didn't return in earnest until the '80s.

LMK if you have an interest. (also have a MIB, but you couldn't get it away from me with anything less than a Bougle MK II)

Your reel was made in the late 1940's, following WW2. Lawson made reels until about 1955. Is it the single piece body/frame?

Canadian reels

Post by fish2458 »

Some more Canadian reels I"ve found are the Tamco, from Montreal. I"ve also found a J. C. Higgins made by the same company and was told they were sold br Sears. There is also the last find of a reel made by the C. N. F. T. , Canada Needle & Fishing Tackle. No info here either. I"ve also found a reel mads in Ottawa by Brenco Products Ltd. Another find is a bait caster " St-Louis" # 2225 Made in Canada. In Windsor a company " W. R. Murphay Mfg Co." Pat. 1948 made the old trolling combination rod & reel.Still looking for a Lucky Strike reel and boxes for the bata reels. I believe Great Lakes reels were also produced in Windsor at some point. As I"m unable to find info on Canadian manufactures it keeps it interesting to look for more and add to my list. If you have a list of more Canadian producers could you post to add a little more info. :D

Go to www.cafta.ca. This is the C anadian version of ORCA. They are much smaller and not as well organized but a pretty good source of info.on C anadian reels and lures. The site is having some tech. problems at the moment that won't let you access everything but should be up and running soon. :type: Canadian

This is the list I sent Tony a few days ago. It was compiled from the Granville Museum site several years ago:

• Gatley, C. M. "Tats" - Vancouver BC, emigrated from England and manufactured superlative reels in 1940s, 50s, and 60s.
• Auger, Graham. Campbell River, BC, 4" Silex replica.
• C anadian made mooching reel c1940's maker unknown
• Coates Aircraft fly reel, Vancouver, BC. large salmon/steelhead style fly or mooching reels. I have seen a couple of these on eBay.
• Coulson Centre Pin spinning reel. Vancouver, BC. precision centre pin reel.
• Gibbs "Rainbow" mooching reel.
• Heard & Wilson, Vancouver BC. Bakelite Mooching reel 1950s-60s
• Hudson "Rod Master" casting reel. light alloy, probably 1940s and 1950s.
• Karl Stack Centre Pin casting reel. Surrey, BC. made fly reels and mooching reels. Solid & light. one shown was dated Feb 5, 1975.
• Norm MacDonald "Major" style centre pin spinning reel. 3-5/8". Also made fly reels in Vancouver, BC then moved to Vancouver Island. Highest quality. Also shown was a black anodized fly reel of highest quality. All these reels were very limited production made in the late 1970s. Several different models shown in Museum.
• Unknown maker - 5" sea trolling reel of brass & fiberglass made in Burnaby in the 1950s.
• Clough float reel (picture, but no further information)
• Thomas Cemm. Vancouver, BC. A one man operation producing many bait casting (centre pin) and fly fishing reels though the 1940s into the 1950s. Advertised and sold exclusively in BC. Also shown was a 4" mooching reel

Maybe there is something there that you Canadians weren't aware of. I have photos of the reels that were on exhibit at the museum.

I am always looking to enhance my all Canadian collection. The more unusual, offbeat the better. I missed out on the Thomas C. reel on EBay and just got through buying a Gibbs Jubillee.

To the best of my knowledge, I did have the finest...till some SOB did a B & E on my home and cleaned me out of a substntial amount of belongings.

You sure have a daunting task ahead of you to rebuild your collection. As you know C anadian reels are few and far between and even harder to find. Goodluck and if you happen to have more than 1 of a particular reel, i'd be happy to take it off your hands. Canadian

Eckmier reel from Canada

Post by Richard Lodge »

Tony and all Canadian collectors: I'm not looking to sell this reel but would like to find out more about the maker and period it was made. It's a standard skeleton style reel, marked in script on the back, Eckmier, Made in Canada. It's a little bigger than a standard Pflueger Progress or Meisselbach Featherlight and has an unusual metal knob, not the usual wood or plastic. Any ideas as to the origin? THanks!

Islander reels

Post by Paul M »

I ran across Islander brand fly reels a few years ago when I was shopping for a big game reel to take to Alaska. Islander fly reels are made in British Columbia. They appear to be high quality. I presume all models are relatively recent. I don't know the company history.

At this moment, there are at least 3 Islander reels on e-Bay. Also, I have seen them in the fly fishing department at the Bass Pro shop north of Toronto.

Here is the manufacturer's website:

CANADIAN REELS

Post by hurdpete »

Hardyguy:

Your pictures went away! I do know of one bait-casting reel by Hardy- the "Elarex". Made from the late 30's (1938, I think) to early 60's (1962?). beautifully made like all the other Hardy stuff, but a pretty conventional design with a projecting levelwind housing and no drag.

Canadian Reels

Post by MLP59 »

I came across this post while researching a reel in my posession. I have a Lawson Machine Works baitcaster. From what I've discovered so far, this must be the model with the red handles and curved level wind guide. Everything is intact and in working order. PM me if you have interest.

Coates Precision Duplex Reel

Just found this forum and a post about Canadian fishing reels after opening my deceased grandfather's tackle box in preparation for a garage sale. It contains a lot of wild looking lures - but I also found a mint reel in it's original box - I don't think it has ever been used. I can send pictures if needed - rounding up a digital camera first. But just wanted to check to see if there's any interest here and if anyone can give me a rough idea as to its value.

The dark green box has a white aged label on it:
Coates Precision 3-1/2 IN. "DUPLEX" REEL
Manufactured By Coates Aircraft Limited
Vancouver, Canada
A Product of Canada

The label has been stamped with "Black Closed"

The silver reel itself is in perfect condition with gold and green colored line and has a small attached plate that reads:
Made By
Coates Aircraft Limited
Vancouver BC Canada

I will likely put it up for auction on Ebay (username dbdeveloper) in next week if anyone thinks it might be of interest.

PM me and I should be able to send pictures shortly.

Hi guys! I'm making good headway in my collecting of everything Canadian, but i'm still looking for more. I'm particularly interested in fly or trolling reels from the Great Lakes region or B.C. Please look through your dusty reels and see if any are of Canadian manufacture, and if you don't use or collect them, consider selling them to me.

For some reason i can't stop collecting these things. Please help find a cure by filling my collection. yay-banana usa canadian
