Meisselbach #33, Good Luck #600

Post by corbo »

I finally bought a copy of P. White's spiral bound "More" Meisselbach publication. I am very glad that I did. Chapter 25 on missing Amateur reels is outstanding and brought me to the realization that I have a few more holes to fill re: the 4 5/8" diameter trollers.
Chapter 27 speaks of both the Good Luck #600 and more so of the Expert #33. I was fortunate to find a #33 in outstanding condition in 2016 with a box. He describes the #33 as being only marked on the face with "A.F. Meisselback & Bro., Newark, NJ". The reel I have does have that marking, but also is stamped on the face of the spool with the "Good Luck" fish and horseshoe logo. Soooo....I am a bit perplexed. Anyone having knowledge with regard to this.....I would appreciate hearing of it.
The following chapter describes the #600 Good Luck metal reel wherein he states the only stamped marking on the face is the Good Luck fish and horseshoe logo. There is no A.F. Meisselbach & Bro identification stamp. That adds to my perplexion. Phil's publications are outstanding. Without them the Meisselbach collector is in the dark.
Am on the hunt for the #600, the Expert #21, and the elusive Expert #22 with exposed face plate click. I need some "good luck".

Dave:

Here is the Expert No. 33 in my collection. The box has the "Good Luck" Trademark, but he reel does not. The reel and box are from Phil's collection. I would like to see a picture of your Expert with the Good Luck trademark on it. If I could, I would like to add it to the book I am doing on Meisselbach reels. I am redoing Phil's book with his permission and doing everything in color. Will take another year. Am working on the Expert chapter as we speak.

To address your question on the Expert 22 with the exposed front click, it my not exist. I have checked about 5 early Abbey & Imbrie, Tryon, and other catalogs and it is not listed with the front click. Am still working on it.

Might be able to help you find an Expert No. 21.

Roger,
Appears as if you have become the #2 Meisselbach Guru with your deep interest, efforts, and relationship with Phil. Have a feeling however that he will out fish you on the Snake even without his pup on your next trip. Mine is a perfect lady until one is hooked, but a regarded helpful companion. I am remiss in that I never had the opportunity to meet him.
I will post photos here of the reel......the box I have is the same as yours, and will send them to you directly also. I agree on the front click 22 but Phil's intuition may someday prove us to be incorrect. I can only hope.
Your assistance on the 21 would be very much appreciated, same for the 600 which is also a likely pipe dream. Collecting these little reels has ben too much fun. Keeps an older guy a younger guy with a dream..a very nice thing for me.

Hello Roger,

I am very interested in your Meisselbach book. Would love to be notified when you publish. Are you offering any opportunities or keeping a list for early signed Limited Editions or hard covers? If you are please include me.

Thanks,

Mike C.
