O NYBORG REEL

Post by arne »

I have a tiny early reel marked O Nyborg on the bottom of the foot. Looks like the name was stamped
in when reel was made. Reel has metal handle knob

Looks like an early Terry trade reel circa mid 1880’s but marked with a European retailer’s name. (Or maybe Chubb)

Arne, are you certain of the spelling? A blowup of the pic makes it look like G. something. I can't make out the other letters clearly. There was a Boston locksmith named G. Nyberg back in the day.

Steve, The stamp is O Nyborg. I think Paul might be right about the reel being made in the U.S. and sold
in Europe. Nyborg is a popular name in Denmark .
Thanks Paul, + Steve

Another possibility— Nyborg is a city in central Denmark.

I have an A&I reel that looks remarkably similar. I will it out and post a photo. Neat reel, Arne!

Nyborg is a popular name in Denmark .
It's also a popular name in Sweden and Norway, and most of the Nyborgs I've located in the U.S. in the 1870-90ish period came from those countries.

Yes it is, so of course i had a quick look around here in Sweden for sporting goods stores and reel collector sites and whatnot named Nyborg. Didn’t really find much, except for the Nyborg bike store up the road a ways. (not all too far from where Rainbow reels were located, coincidentally)
Sweden had several reelmakers / brands. Anybody have look in Dan Skupien’s book?
