Reels at Gettysburg

Post by Mike N »

With everyone social distancing and wearing masks when necessary, the Gettysburg NFLCC room trading show sold out over 70 rooms near the famous Civil War battlefield. Gary Lopez does a great job, with an interesting show and tell by attendees tonight, including some tournament reels.

Former NFLCC President and ORCA member Randy Anderson and his pal Beebe drove 18 hours from Oklahoma, and ORCA Life Member Doug Whittington came in from Maryland and regaled us at dinner with stories of his decade traveling the globe in the Merchant Marines. A lot of collectors came in from upstate New York.

The show has plenty of vintage sporting and camping collectibles including vintage axes and Bowie knives, long bows, landing nets and yes, even a 300 lb anvil which sold to Doug’s buddy and got loaded up a la Forged In Fire.

Sounds like a good time for all. I like those photos Mike. Did you get the M&M reel? Below is a photo Doug sent me of his score at Gettysburg.

Dean,
Tell me about it! I live 2hrs away, but supply chain issues at work are keeping me from taking off to enjoy the show. Remember when Bart ran the old one at Carlilse many moons ago.

Thanks for sharing pics

Unfortunately, the trend of some collectors leaving after room trading ends Saturday morning continues, but there were a few interesting items on the tables this morning. I love a long foot on an old brass reel. Note the Diamond brand line sold by Shapleigh.

This is the first tackle box I’ve ever seen constructed totally of Bakelite.

To show the breadth of other sporting collectibles, these 6 vintage wooden bats, including a Mickey Mantle and a Hank Aaron, sold for a total of $50.
