Murphy wins another one

Post by john elder »

So, i was cleaning this little part off a Pflueger Atlapac this AM:

It went flying; guess where it landed:

A. On my semi-clean work bench

B. On my semi-clean shop floor

C. In a bucket of aluminum shavings from a past lathe run.

A and B wouldn’t make much of a tale, so i won’t keep you in suspense. Three trips through that bucket and 45 minutes later, i finally found that little bugger….lesson learned? Probably not! :bash:

Nice recovery, nonetheless, John. Many years ago I used to have a little reel cleaning table in a spare room inside the house.....with deep-pile shag carpeting. What could possibly go wrong?

You might consider moving your work room a little further away from the bucket.

Keep your bucket of aluminum shavings from a past lathe run upside down.

You know why you always find what you are looking for in the last place you look?

Because once you find it you stop looking for it.

I think dog springs go to heaven. What I say when they leave this world may prevent me from meeting them there.

Ha! I didn’t know it either till it hit the floor while cleaning that auxiliary drag lever! Will have to see what heroics are needed to keep it in place when back together. …. And thanks for all those wonderful tidbits of advice, folks

what soured me on attempted reel repair was when I decided to disassemble, clean, & lube a cheap shakespeare auto fly reel. well, as soon as I took the spring out it went flying across my shop. try as I might, I was unable to put that reel back together.never again. danger, Will Robinson, danger!,

Oh, dude… i could have told you over the phone where your part went. They always do. At least you won your fight with the chip bucket.
I can’t even begin to tell you how many exquisite tiny one-off parts i have made… twice.

i dropped a bail spring on my tile floor once it bounced away never to be seen again, i thought, 3 months later i found it about 30' away stuck to the bottom of the curtain, i did have a nice cleanly swept floor tho and that was the day i figured out SOME springs are interchangeable with others
