Shakespeare Model B

Post by Jim Nedela »

I picked up a box with a Model B twin screw. It is marked "Shakespeare #1762 L.B.W". The question is, the oppisite end has a list of patent dates, ending with a 1930 date. Was the Model B produced into the 30's? and, is this the correct box for serial #1752, the reel that came in it. It's marked 1918 Model on the foot. Thanks, Jim Nedela.

Jim,
Your reel was marked as such from 1918 till 1922. The latest one I have ever seen is a Model 1926 but that is the correct number. Of the catalogues I have, it dissapeared in 1923. I have the catalogues for 1930,'31,'32, etc. and it doesn't show up in them.

Thanks for the reply, Harvey, but I did goof on the lettering. Should read L.W.B, for level wind model B. Does anyone have the same box? I would like to know what it is for, with the list of patents on it. Jim.

Jim,
How about posting a picture of it. Never seen anything like that. (I don't think)

Here is a link to a pic of the box. The printing is factory script. It is blue letters, just like the rest of the box lettering. I will take a pic of the other end to show the patent dates, Jim.

Thanks Jim.
I would bet it is a repair box. I have seen boxes with handwritten numbers, blank and with reconditioned stickers on them. That is my guess that someone sent their reel in ot be fixed sometime in the thirties and this is what it was returned in. Either way, no matter what, VERY neat box.
Here is a box for a reconditioned #1837 with the last patent date being 1932. The #1837 reel didn't appear till 1936.

That certainly is a possibility, but the lettering is printed on just like the rest of the lettering on the box. It is not written on. There is not an added label. The end of the box is part of the original entire box paper covering the cardboard. Anyway, it is a neat box. Jim.

Printed?

Post by Len Sawisch »

Jim,

Not sure what you mean about the one end being "printed" and not written on, because all three "E"s in Shakespeare are different - which means they were not type-set. What am I missing? (Other than the fact you got a cool reel in an unusual box and I don't)?

Well, good point, Len. I looked at the lettering under magnification. Deffinitely was written on the box. Can't see this with the naked eye. Sure was tring to turn it into a one of a kind find, worth millions. Jim.
