We are getting closer to the National 2022 Show! We made a schedule change on Thursday to move the casting contest to the morning and move the fishing on Elkhorn Creek to the afternoon. This is to better position the fishing conditions which favor a better bite in the afternoon on that particular creek at that time. You can get any updates at https://www.orcaonline.org/2022-nationa ... nkfort-ky/

Now the tricky part of the convention will be if you want to schedule a bourbon tour in Frankfort. The tours are by reservation only and fill up fast. Therefore, if you want a spot, you have to register online by Aug 2 to ensure any reasonable choice. You cannot register for Sept until Aug 2 at 9 AM. Go to the website https://reservations.buffalotracedistillery.com/ to sign up.

See you there!

The bourbon tours for Buffalo Trace are full for Sept, which means that you have to book thru a commercial tour group if you want that distillery. There are still open spots for other distilleries such as Castle and Key and Woodford. You have to book them individually from the distillery site. If you are interested in a commercial tour group, we will have recommended companies posted before the show.

Quick question for the Kentucky locals - is there relatively reliable Uber or Lyft service between Louisville and Frankfort? Trying to avoid getting a rental car if possible. Also, what are the show hours going to be on Saturday?
Wanted: Horton, Bristol & Meek reels, reel boxes, and catalogs!!!!

Hey Bill,

On Saturday, the show is open to the public from 9AM to 2PM. Display and sales tables tear down will be after that.

Bill,

There is reliable Uber and Lyft service from Louisville International Airport to Frankfort, a distance of about 50 miles. The charge is around $110 unless you are in peak 5 PM times.

If BL or some other member can rendezvous that would be great. Otherwise, the Uber is viable and you can probably get a lift back Sat.

Antique Fishing on Elkhorn Creek

The annual fishing contest event at the National Convention is gearing up to be a good one. Henry Caldwell will lead this event, and ORCA member Bill McVeigh will guide the group. Bill has fished the Elkhorn frequently for over 20 years and has lots of advice and guidance which will be tuned for the conditions. Anyone can fish with any equipment, but to win the Antique Fishing Contest, your equipment must be at least 50 years old and rods must be wood, bamboo, steel, or fiberglass. No graphite or modern rods. The Elkhorn is ideally suited for light tackle, fly, spinning, or light bait casting.

Bill McVeigh sent me a picture of suggested fishing lures and flys for the Elkhorn. Species of fish in the Elkhorn include catfish, rock bass, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, carp, crappie, and bluegill. Smallmouth bass is the featured fish of the Elkhorn, as the Elkhorn has been known to have a healthy population of this species. Hellgramite and crayfish fly patterns do well, as do other attractor minnow patterns such as the mudler minnow and some epoxy head flies. We will be renting canoes for the 4 hour trip, but you can also choose to fish from the bank at one of the locations listed here. For more information, see this description: https://fw.ky.gov/Fish/Pages/Elkhorn-Creek.aspx

Check out the suggested lures and match your antique lures to it if you wish (optional). I will be fishing the 3 inch Yo-zuri suspending minnows or similar baits.

I realized we are missing some important information on the Antique Fishing Contest. It will be very helpful for you to get your fishing license and fill out the online waiver prior to Thursday. It has to be done online.

THE GROUP WILL DEPART FROM THE FRANKFORT HOTEL PROMPTLY AT 12:00 PM THURSDAY. IF YOU ARE LATE, YOU MAY MISS THE GROUP SHUTTLE.

Rods and Reels and line must be at least 50 years old (no graphite or monofilament).

Fishing License for 1 day non-resident of Ky is $15 at available online at https://app.fw.ky.gov/Solar/

REQUIRED FOR CANOE KENTUCKY RENTAL:
Click here to fill out an online waiver for your trip. https://www.adventurecentral.com/user/w ... ID=3970090. (Note that this link is unique for Henry Caldwell). Each person over 18 years of age in your party will be required to sign a waiver. Anyone under 18 will need a waiver completed and signed by a legal guardian. We've made this process quick and easy! Please have all waivers filled out ahead of your arrival to ensure a smooth and on time shuttle departure. Because this is a necessary procedure, if your waivers are not filled out online prior to your trip, you will have to fill them out at our shop kiosk, which may delay your departure time to the next shuttle departure. Please note, waivers are online only, we do not use paper waivers.

Please watch this required safety video ahead of your arrival. https://www.canoeky.com/safety-video. Each participant will sign on their waiver that they have viewed the safety video.

Plan to arrive at the proper launch point 15-30 minutes prior to your reservation departure time. Please plan accordingly! Our shuttles leave on time- if you're running late, we may have to push you back to the next available shuttle departure time.

The location for fishing will be Canoe Kentucky https://www.canoeky.com. Canoe for 2 persons is $60 and we have 5 canoes reserved. We need for everyone to get a final count by Wed afternoon. We will leave the hotel at 12:00 PM Thursday and arrive at the outfitter by 12:30.
