The business opened in 1868 when the Clarks began making fishing lines, and Dwight was still selling tackle until 1920 or so. Btw, the reel in the Merwin catalog is the same as the reel in the Clark ad on page 240 of my book.Clark Bros. were in business from 1874 - 1899 or so.

Spalding got out of the tackle business about 1900 then dove in for two or three more years in about 1928. Very interesting about the Clark Bros. Its hard to believe they never placed their trademark on any of the reels they manufactured. JVH usually had both Spalding's and their mark on the trade reels they produced.
