Co-sign. The most detailed book on fishing reels and their history ever written. You can't collect fishing reels and not have this in your library.

Re: Christmas gift suggestion
Does it have anything about Fin-Nor reels in it ??
Re: Christmas gift suggestion
It contains the story of U.S. reels to about 1920. It explains the development of the features you admire in Fin-Nor reels: drags, gearing, multiple speeds, frames, etc. It will help you understand the thinking that went into the construction of Fin-Nor, Penn, Ocean City, and other later reels. After all, Fred Grieten wasn't working in a vacuum when he invented his reel. IMHO, the book will give you a deeper appreciation of whatever reels you collect - trolling, baitcasting, fly-fishing, spinning, or whatever. And it will help immensely in identifying older American reels.
William Hildreth is a well-known antiques dealer in Litchfield, Ct. In an article entitled "The Enduring Value of Antiques" he wrote: "What I appreciate today more than ever is that to own a true antique is to preserve a piece of someone’s past. It also presents quite a responsibility—for, in a way, those of us who sell and own antiques are custodians of history...There is a history to preserve. Knowing the history behind a particular piece enriches that responsibility."
What I found most remarkable while researching for the book was that almost every highly-advertised reel feature that later makers and mass-producers incorporated into their reels was invented by an "amateur" who turned his attention briefly to improving fishing reels. All ORCAns should be grateful to them.

Re: Christmas gift suggestion
Articles and books like this and others you've published helped me to appreciate much more than the name Pflueger that started my interest in collecting reels. It's amazing to learn about the origins of the features I thought were "invented" by Pflueger. And, of course, learning about things I don't collect always helps me ID stuff that's of value to others for possible bargaining opportunities lol

Got a spare reel stamped "Pflueger" or a Montague Imperial?
