Can you say "Pavlov".
Very nice indeed. At least the previous owner, although he/she scratched the reel, did it on the bottom of the foot. Will you polish are leave it alone? Solid face plate or capped?

It has a "capped" head plate. I'm leaving it as-is.

Possibly the rear plate was factory replaced after the original plate broke? Hence the two different plate colors. Nice example of a Edward Vom Hofe Reel.

More likely, the head cap was exposed to much more uv than the tail plate, like it sat on a shelf or in an open box. Hard to say.

Odd that there is no fading to the inside of the rear plate.

Ron, what feature/s look Slote-like to you ?

Dean, Long-term shelf position can be a big factor in ebonite fade, which is actually UV-oxidation.
The Spalding Kosmic I've posted here before has a dark band on the face plate from the handle shadow.

Ron G, thanks for posting - very nice reel.

Here's one that has been identified by Mr. Hoerter as a Slote reel marked size 2. I know, prove it. It's not marked.

And here's another candidate marked size 3 1/2.

That's a head scratcher for sure.

On the reel in question, the knob and handle screw certainly look like Slote.

Beyond that, I'm confused.

Do you have both reels ? If yes, are the rear plates interchangeable ?

Headscratcher, for sure. Almost looks like the plates are different materials.

The face plates are fabricated differently, nickel silver rim on the No. 2, but other details sure make them look like siblings.
Oxidized ebonite always looks different from shiny black.

The "oxidation" is actually sulfur atoms, a component of hard rubber, migrating to the surface and forming a layer, causing that nasty, depending on how you see it, baby brown color. Not really
"oxidation" .

Sulfur atoms can't migrate to the surface without their atomic bond cracking - that's oxidation.
Carbon black depletion through the broken polymer chains is also part of the mechanism making the ebonite look like leather.
TX PE No. 75665 - this is my licensed bailiwick - want my Federal Court CV, as well...
(there's actually a case on rubber aging there - our side won)

John, I wouldn't be too shocked about Slote reels marked for EVH - they also marked Redditch reels (Young pattern 15a).

Just once, when we're trying to compare reels, it would be nice to see pics of each taken from similar angles and clearly showing ALL the relevant details AND shots of the insides. Then we could assemble composites like this, which make it easy to compare particular features.

The top two rows allow for easy comparisons. With the EVH/Slote reel, we can't see the top of the foot or much between the sideplates.
IMHO, the grasps of the left and right reels look like Kopf, tho I've seen similar ones on Mallesons. The center grasp looks Slotey, tho. Other details, who knows?

Nice job Steve. A lot of similarities and some differences. I'm voting the reel to be an EVH reel.
