Shakespeare 1845 HP auto fly reel

Post by John.saulen »

I have this 1845 HP reel and it is working condition. I have never worked on an auto reel and would like to take it down and clean it up. Where might I find a schematic for this reel? Or any other helpful info, Thanks

They're fairly simple to take apart and service but be careful with the spring. If it comes loose it's a chore to put it back in place and get it rewound. :bash: Don't ask me how I know. :D

If after removing the nutcap on top and lifting up the spring plate you see this, STOP!

Turn the spring plate counterclockwise to disengage the spring, then lift up.
Then lift off the gear plate. Resist using any prying tools since this metal is rather soft and you’ll marr it up. Should just lift off with finger pressure.

Disengage the finger trigger, press in the lower spring bar (which disengages a spring clutch) and the spool should lift out.

Very nice pictorial! I know better than to mess with an auto fly reel from others advice but this is very helpful for those who must. Thank you!

I’m glad it’s helpful. It looks like my reel could use a good cleaning and re-lube.
I’m going to challenge myself to use my autos for trout fishing this coming season. I’m sure my fishing buddies will get a good laugh.

Thanks Eric. After all the horror stories I have heard, I will feel much more comfortable after seeing your pictorial breakdown. Have not found any schematics but you know those famous words, looks simple enough…
