Just got this “Lang’s” auction list by email…

A “Lang’s” auction, or at least the use of Bob’s name, without a richly-photographed catalog is sooo disappointing. Good luck. I can’t wait for an auction alternative.

And it’s live in person bidding only.

I believe this is their Lang's "Discovery" auction which they've been doing for a long time.

Hmm, would Doc Herr's bottle of wine be worth the 4000 mile drive? Maybe next year.

Yes. Unfortunately, that’s the best we have to look forward to unless another auction company steps up to fill the breach. Blanchards does not seem to want to step up its game for vintage fishing tackle. It’s almost impossible to remotely buy without a color photo or two.

The Angling Marketplace is the best we have now.

Wow! Help me understand what this live auction would look like. There are 1600+ items listed. Many (most?) of them are already in quantities greater than one. How long does an auction like this go on? This must last forever!

You have to attend the auction in NY. Below is a link to their website.

I gave up after a few pages.

I have a friend who normally bid for me and he is "disappointed"

I used to go to these auctions, but stopped a few years back. Despite Potsdam being far away from all U.S. population centers (near the Canadian border) the competition was fierce. Not much gets past the fair number of dealers in attendance. Accommodations are limited and surprisingly expensive. I camped once at a decent primitive campground along a river northeast of town but it closed. The auctioneers are good. They go through about 150-200 lots per hour, so you have to be on your toes. Always have a good selection but not a lot of high end stuff - this was mostly the stock that didn't make it into the catalogued auctions. I liked the discovery auction better when it was at Madison/Bouckville, two hours closer for me. 5600 lots in two day auctions. Imagine previewing 2800 lots in a day - your head felt like it was going to explode by the end of the auction. Now that was insane!

I agree with you. Unfortunately, I went thru all 1100+ lots this evening and there were only about 2-3 dozen that would cut the mustard as a single lot at Lang’s. The quality just hasn’t found its way to AM yet. No more coins being offered, but books for sale by the pound. Perhaps when sellers realize this is the last, best venue, the quality will improve.

Langs will not be easily replaced. I am not sure why we think that we need to anoint any service. They will either emerge, or not.
