DIAMOND MFG. CO. ST. LOUIS U.S.A.

Post by mark bumgarner »

Picked this old Meisselbach reel up at an auction this week. It has all the usual "Meisselbach Mfg Co., Elyria Ohio, on bottom and patent info on tail plate, last date being Aug. 3, 09.
I can not locate any info on this reel. Diamond Mfg. Co. did make baseball bats for Shapleigh hardware in St. Louis but I can not find any mention of tackle. Is this the same company?? I did find an old spool tag on Ebay with the same company name and that diamond logo in the center which is similar to the one used by Shapleigh for its Diamond Edge and possibly other lines.
Paid a little more than I normally would on a chance this was something Rare. Hope someone can bail me out.
Thanks,
Bummy

When you reside in a storage shed in the hills of Tn. It's a challenge to find anything!

Well I thought that may be the case, however most Simmons and Shapleigh reels I had seen in the past were stamped "Simmons" or "Shapleigh.
Hope you find that casting reel Jon, things like that drive me nuts!
Thanks guys!
Oh by the way, I am reading "THE PIONEERS " , by J. F. Cooper and was wondering if there was any connection to Dr. Elnathan Todd, commonly referred to Dr. Todd in this novel. hehe

You can down load a 1910 Norvell Shapleigh Catalog from the ORCA Library. It shows your reel and a lot of other nice reels, lures and rods.

"Diamond Mfg. Co." was actually a trade marked brand name of Shapleigh Hardware, rather than a manufacturer. Similar to Edw. K. Tryon's "Pennell Reel Co.", which was also just a brand name owned by Tryon and not a reel company.

I collect trinkets from several old tackle retailers and have these from Shapleigh/Diamond:

Mark's onto it.
Also interesting, because Diamond Brand was one of many trademarks of HSB&Co hardware, which later became True Value.

Mike, you might be interested in that Diamond Mfg. Co. foil line tag pictured on top of this post. It is listed on ebay for around $14.00 plus $5.00 shipping but does have the make offer option.

Thanks Ron got the catalog downloaded and printed out a copy of page to put in my files.

When I pass, if my kids look through all the stuff I have printed and kept over the years, they will think Ol Dad is even dumber than we originally thought!

Here’s another Shapleigh’s Diamond reel that was probably made by Shakespeare Products Co.

This was in the box. The illustration looks like a Bal-Cli reel.

Nice combo Eric. These are the stampings I usually see "Shapleighs" so the Diamond Mfg. Co. stamp stumped me. Guess I just need more time in the field.
