I picked up this little single action fly reel and was curious what ORCAns might know about it. It has a distinctive foot (Silas Terry patent? It looks familiar) and somewhat unusual knurling on the oil cap and around the handle. Seems like some extra work for what was probably a cheap reel. Also, the oil cap screws off. The reel also has the number 4 stamped under the foot. Anyone have ideas about this one?
Thanks,
Richard
Thanks, Steve and Mike. I thought it was a decent quality reel, too. The finish is in somewhat tough shape but it was used for angling, I assume, which is honest work or pleasure.
I like the Mallesonian hypothesis, Mr. Vernon. I had not thought of that.
Hi John - Not painted, just finish discoloration. I put it into a mild vinegar soak and used a toothbrush on it but it's still pretty ugly. Suggestions?
I'll second Steve, looks Malleson to me. I had a reel with the same bearing cap, screw, foot, but with hard rubber sideplates with the same circular lines on the plates. The consensus of opinion was that is was a Malleson.
