In Japan, custom tiny tackle to catch the tiniest fish

Post by Richard Lodge »

I found this somewhat fascinating, the way so much care and artistic ability goes into crafting the tiny floats and rods to catch the smallest fish possible. It's not always about catching the biggest fish or the most fish, is it?

I have a small creek that flows through the back corner of my property that was once stocked trout water. The neighbors say they have seen few to no fish in there and I have attempted a few casts to no avail. Its nice water although quite overgrown so I have often thought about buying a “tiny fishing” rig and seeing what happens. Maybe someday!

Fascinating stuff. I showed this to my wife Robin, and she wants to try this out. She loves the small tackle and floats. The size of these floats are similar to ice fishing floats. Thanks for posting this.

Got a spare reel stamped "Pflueger" or a Montague Imperial?

Exactly, Brian! Maybe that's why Tony made them so small.

I just don't get it. If you had a choice whether to fish for trout (or any other regular sized fish) or fish for minnows, why would anyone choose minnows?

Some consider it a bigger challenge. I know of a couple of guys here in Nebraska that take that pretty seriously. Me, I'd be using a seine.
Love those Open Face Spinning Reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco)

Admittedly those are extremely small, but I have a 3/4 fly rod I have sometimes used for brookies and dace in mountain streams. It is mostly contrived sport. I can see the cultural connection there in Tokyo where there are not bigger waters.

I wouldn't even need that equipment. I have a fairly infuriating skill of catching fish smaller than my bait on regular equipment.
I would like any unusual pflueger casting reels!

Cool! I've done something akin. Not making tiny tackle but catching tiny (3") fishes (silversides and logperch) on a #24 hook, bit of worm (skin), and letting 4" of the tip of my UL stick out from a dock edge. The tip would vibrate, I'd pick up, and Voila! One time I picked up and had a ~17" pike on! Still not sure how that happened. Pike either took a minnow as it was nibbling, took the bait. Or... just inhaled.
