Pflueger Akron 1893 Pawl/Worm Gear Help Requested

Post by Reel Doc »

Hey all,

So I've been taking apart this Akron I got off Ebay:

The problem I'm having (among other things) is that I've never seen a worm gear setup like this and after reviewing a couple Akron schematics, it doesn't look right:

I'm not sure what I'm meant to do here, as there was an extra pawl (the same you would find in the schematics) in the reel as well.

I've tried to remove the metal where the pawl is supposed to go, but have had no luck in removing it. The only thing I could think of is that it from a different reel.

Any insight would be fantastic - thanks in advance!

I am sorry no one has responded. I am laid up right now and can not get to any of my reels or parts boxes. Hopefully someone will respond, lots of people on site know Pflueger reels very well. Good luck.

No worries! Figuring it out is part of the fun!!

As a general update: I am suspecting that the worm gear and pawl are from a different reel. The line guide does not match up in the divot where it would normally sit and run across the reel.

I would say you are most likely correct. I would think and hope someone will step up that has the correct parts for you. I would try but am a few months away from access to my stuff.

Next time you need something, I recommend contacting ORCA member Dick Janak. He's helped me out many, many times and usually will have a good supply of parts for most common reels and sometimes for scarce reels too.

Got a spare reel stamped "Pflueger" or a Montague Imperial?

I’m just seeing this now myself. I second Dick Janak. He’s helped me out with parts a number of times.

Hey Bruce, sorry to hear you’re laid up. Hope you recover soon.
