Heddon Anti-Back-Lash Reels

Post by RonG »

I ran across this catalog depiction of the Heddon 3-15 and 3-35 reels being offered as ant-back-lash reels in the 1925 VL&A Catalog. I have seen the 3-15 with the anti-back-lash bar on it, but have not seen a 3-35 with the bar. Does anyone have one? It's always fun to look at the old catalogs in the ORCA Library.

Ron,
Lang's has sold two in the last 5 years. The 3-35 is far less common than the 3-15 when fitted with that Anti-Back-Lash bar.

I have both the 3-15ABL and 3-35ABL. Over the years I've had several more pass through my hands and have seen a couple that were missing the ABL bar. I'm 95% sure that Rich Dickman has (had) examples of both of these reels also. As did Bill Roberts. And I think perhaps John Savu now owns at least one (not sure if John has the 3-15 or 3-35)

I will post pics of mine later today or perhaps tomorrow. I have an appointment this afternoon.

I don’t have those reels, but I do have that knife!
Never knew what model it was, but it looks like I’ve been using it for the right purpose. I split my bamboo with it.

Here are pics of both the 3-15ABL and 3-35ABL.

I first became aware of the ABL add-on to the Heddon reels I think around 1998 or so and had one or two in my collection by year 2003. I could be wrong on the date, but I think that was the year of the mother of all auctions in Michigan. I saw one there and was high bidder. After the auction concluded, I recall another extremely knowledgeable collector looking at the reel and telling me "this is not factory, this reel has been modified".

I believe it is a Marbles Gladstone. I have one with the sheath that I got from my uncle in the 1950s, which he had as a kid. They have become a bit valuable in recent years

I believe if you look closely you will find the Marbles name and info on the blade is the opposite direction and the reverse will have a 1916 date.

I just picked up a 3-15 but it is missing the anti-backlash bar. The drag works fine. Any chance I could find the anti-backlash bar?
Collect mostly Ky style reels; Meek, Heddon, Horton, Pflueger Redifor and Worth, etc.

Thanks for the link Mark. It looks like my knife is from WW2 era to about 1952 when they stopped using the Bakelite pommel. I decided to give it more respect and cleaned up and tightened the stacked leather grip and had a new sheath made for it by Steve’s Archery Leather Craft which far exceeded my expectations.
I won’t hijack this Heddon thread anymore with my knife.
