More Reel Fun

Post by klonder »

This was an interesting save in that an unknown, to me, construction technique used in Bakelite reel production was revealed and figuring out the "hows" of the fix was enjoyable.
This MC "Symploreel" came to me with it's bones exposed.

Pressed a mold, mounted the ring in the mold and slathered in some JB Weld fender filler to cast one side.

Reversed the process, cast the other side and filled the hole in the back plate

Then filling, shaping and polishing to end up with a reasonable, functional repair.

Nice job! That’s a metal framework inside, yes? Makes things a bit stronger and gives something to hold onto.

Thanks all.
Patience comes in waiting 24 for the JBWeld to cure completely. Wanting to get at the shaping, etc. is sometimes hard to deal with. Messed up a couple when the lack of patience prevailed.

Can you tell me what the white stuff is in the pic that you used to make the mold?
Collect mostly Ky style reels; Meek, Heddon, Horton, Pflueger Redifor and Worth, etc.

Certainly in 6 languages !

A think a slightly harder molding clay would do better at fine edges. This stuff is pretty soft and distorts easily.
