My Best Find in awhile

Post by Reelman2 »

This is a Shapleigh Special solid Brass baitcast reel. I think this 60 yd reel was made by Montague, but you tell me. It has fancy engraving on both the front and back plates. I purchased the reel on E-bay for $135 shipped. When I bid on the reel I thought it was German Silver. When it arrived I was very surprised. I think I did alright at that price.

Collect mostly Ky style reels; Meek, Heddon, Horton, Pflueger Redifor and Worth, etc.

Just gorgeous, I chased that one for a while. I’m glad you got it.

Nice find! Just beautiful engraving.

I love Shapleigh Hardware items. Relics of a very cool era in American sporting goods sales.

And for sure that is not gold plating? Unless it was recently polished it seems like brass would be darker?

Nice find and pretty cool reel. This reel is actually Gold Plated...it has a spun brass frame that is heavily gold plated. A page from the 1918 Shapeleigh catalog prominently shows this reel at the top of the page. They were 156.00 for a dozen reels so guessing that is the whole sale cost. It was a fairly expensive reel for 1918.
here is a copy of the catalog page showing this reel... Thanks for sharing. Bill

KeyReels; Bill:

That’s a great catalog find. I enlarged it a bit. Thanks

That is a nice find - now you need one of these to display with it.

I have a Rev-O-Noc marked HSB&Co Pflueger displayed next to an HSB&Co Diamond Brand knife.
Also have a set of Rev-O-Noc nesting camp cups.
