Weebly websites

Post by Steve »

I received an email insisting that "As a current Weebly user, you are required to update your login and connect with Square by October 6, 2022." The update link in the email brings up only a blank page. Other attempts give a choice of either a new Square commercial account or a new Weebly account. I already have two websites on Weebly and don't want to lose them.

Can anyone tell me how to update the login and keep the two websites? OR, is there a way to download the complete websites so I can post them elsewhere?

I got the same notice and dance. They blocked my access to my site page with popups, wanting me to set up new login to Square… i didn’t even know i had Square. Anyway, the direction they are heading us seems likely be economically driven. I’m glad i’m not heavily i invested there. Can appreciate why you don’t want to lose those wonderful sites, Steve!

As an option, you can transfer your sites over to godaddy.com. That's who I use.

The glitch is that the domains are owned by Weebly. As things stand, I would have to recreate the sites to post elsewhere, which I can't do. Ideally, I could transfer the complete source codes to the host I use for my website. If there's a way to do that, Matt, I'll look forward to learning how.

I don't have experience with Weebly or those e-mails, but it sounds like a phishing attempt.

I agree with Jr. Sounds just strange enough to check out first. I would contact Weebly directly first before paying or "logging in".

It's legitimate, but Square seems sufficiently greedy to make it tough to keep our free Weebly sites. If we want to recreate them, fine.

In the past I was able to download a local copy of Weebly page text/html code and individual picture files. That's how the Bronson and OC picture sites were copied and pasted into the ORCA Wordpress site. At that time it was a manual download and reconstruction.... one picture at a time. Maybe it can be done automatically these days.

The ZIP backup was sent to me by e-mail, that was requested from the Weebly page editing dashboard under settings>general> ... scroll down to >Archive. However I just looked at my own ReelyOldReels site and when i try to look at that settings section it asks me to register a store that I don't want to do... so i can't see the current setup. At least my page is still running and I have not yet been sent a ransom notice. Thanks for the warning.

Matt, you had a typo.

Weebly has been free. WP costs, and these are just two 4-page articles. I wanna see if I can transfer them to my own domain host.

Received another dire warning that we need to update our logins by Sept. 29. But this time, the link they provided worked, and the updating, which consisted of opening a Square account, was easy. This way, your Weebly account is linked with the new Square account. Worked for me! :yay (Matt, rest easy. :fished )

I still think you should transfer to your domain, but guess you have some time now, good.

I received the same email but have never owned a Weebly site. I don't know if I was listed as an owner on any of the reel sites that ORCA took over at one point but I thought those were closed or given up.
