I think the "Brooklure" was made by Bronson. Have no idea of age or value. Where is Dave "O" , "The Mayor of Bronson", when we need him?

A "Brooklure" is listed in K White plate 132-9299 as a Bronson reel circ 1930 with value at $300. I suspect a truer value should be near $30, i.e., an editing error.

I have two reels marked "Brooklure". The first looks like the KWhite reel, but my reel has a No. 15 on the headplate with "Brooklure" in script.

The second reel is marked "Brooklure" inside the healplate frame. It is marked with a No. 25. The Headplate is covered with scrolling just like the Sears Meadowbrook shown in K White plate 236-9271. This reel vintage is listed as 1960 IL. Value listed as $50.

From these two examples, it appears that Bronson made the "Brooklure" as a trade reel, and probably had several different headplate designs. It is of special interest to me that the "Brooklure" reels have the same spool arbor and frame as an Oxford reel I have recently found.

Check your reel. Is the No. 35 on the Headplate? Is the name in Script?

Hope this helps. Dale.

Post by SWIM JIG »

:( :!: :?:  jester  jump yay-banana USA , OK guys and gals, without a definet number, condition, size, with or without bearing caps, its imposible to know what they have! #35? is it a level wind? bait caster? counterbal handle or 2 knob handle, in this case at least 2 or 3 pics will be needed! Am I out of reach? NO! as several reels made of brass and of piller design were made years ago and most likly pennel or other mfgs. then a name was put on them , most all of us have a bushel basket of them! Also there was a BROOKLURE reel made in Canada around 1935 or so, the #35 would make me think of the Canadian version mainly that they went with odd #s in their yardage on markings. Dale, I am well aware of your indepth studies and most likly you have it correct, or in the rest of us most likly a Bronson version of type. (peonyflower,) can you submit 3 views? or more description!? Your Ohio Conection on Lake Erie Col. M. lorens aka SWIM JIG (ps a certain narrowing, check the pawl, or threads.

Well . . .

. . . The Brooklure was a Bronson Trade Reel, and I believe Spiegel "owned" the Brooklure name (like Wards owned the Riverside name). The earliest example I have is a German Silver version marked, in script, "Brooklure" and then "Precision Built". This is a heavy, well-built levelwind baitcaster, 100 yrds, dial drag control on the front cover, bridge mounted gears, adjustable back plate click. The box is marked with a Spiegel catalog number "No. CG 631"

Note that this is like the related discussion on the Silver Princes. Bronson used the same name on declining quality reels. I have seen a Brooklure that was a pretty non-descript nickle over brass that wasn't worth $20 in mint condition. The German Silver version, in mint condition, with paper, bag, and box, just might draw $300 from a knowledgable collector who knows that the very first Bronson reels were of especially high quality, and not produced in the great numbers that the later version were.

As for the numbers on the reels themselves, I believe the numbers by the name indicated versions, while the numbers under the feet indicate production intro years. I believe the plain one desribed by me is the oldest, then the 15 and then the 35 (see ebay 7186624635) and 350 (see ebay 7187713841). It looks like the 51 may have been the last? (see ebay 7187284842). There may have been a few in between.

As an aside, I contend that any reel with the "duo-pawl" can pretty safely be identified as a Bronson reel.

Another Brooklure reel ...

Post by Lynn Thomas »

I've got one with Brooklure No. 10 in script on the inside headplate frame. Has the same scene on head and tail plate but different scene than on the Meadowbrook Dale Noll mentions in his post. Pat applied for made in USA on foot. For your info., Lynn Thomas
