“Candy Darters” released by National Fish Hatchery

Post by Mike N »

Saw this interesting tweet Sunday by US Fish & Wildlife Service/ National Fish Hatchery here in West Virginia. The near-endangered species is endemic to the eastern United States where it is known only from the Kanawha River system in the states of Virginia and West Virginia.

Beautiful things they are. Relatively recent work parsing out genetics has identified lots of new species, esp in darters and salamanders. The Appalachians is a remarkably diverse region.

Thanks Mike, that is one colorful fish. I have never seen one. I have seen the somewhat scarce at least out here in the west, Red Horse Sucker that lives in cold streams. Its color was used by CCBC as one of the colors for some lures. I think it would be considered a tough color mostly a cross between pike and Dace. I will not try to add humor but I thought of one line.....
