Summit 1993 vs: 1993-J
I was looking at some early Pflueger pocket catalogs and the 1928 one is the first one I see that lists a Summit. When it comes to the price it lists a 1993 and then it lists a 1993-J that is jeweled. My question is, Did the 1993 just have metal end caps and if so are they rare?
Collect mostly Ky style reels; Meek, Heddon, Horton, Pflueger Redifor and Worth, etc.

Re: Summit 1993 vs: 1993-J
In a 1999 issue of Reel News, Bob Miller lists the 1993J (jeweled) from 1927 to 1930, dropped from the 1931 catalog. The 1993J cost 50cents more than the 1993.
To your question, there is no mention of the end caps of the 1993. I know I’ve not seen a Summit with metal caps. Perhaps the non-jeweled caps may have used glass?

Paul, glass bearings would be very unlikely.
Prewar Summit was nickel silver, and a high-grade reel.

Makes sense. Which leaves the question… why designate “jeweled”?

Re: Summit 1993 vs: 1993-J
there's a difference we haven't defined yet - maybe Bad Bob will know...
1st model Supreme had no jeweled end cap, and it was a $20 reel in 1918
this would be my guess, then they dropped the J when jeweled caps became standard.

I just purchased a 1993, not 1993-J in the box and the box said it had jeweled end caps. Therefore, I am not sure what the difference between the 1993 and the 1993-J would be

Re: Summit 1993 vs: 1993-J
the date could be the only difference - do you know that your reel was made before 1931?
i.e., 2 options before 1931, none after 1931, no need for a J.

My 1993 reel only has 2 patents: 1923 & 26.

Re: Summit 1993 vs: 1993-J
you have the box, is there not a date on the bottom of the box - this is a later Pflueger box May '42
(not original handle grasp, which decomposed in the box - made for a great buy, though)
All the patent stamps will tell you is that the reel was made after the stamped date.
The real patent on that reel is Marhoff's expired patent.
checking the patents on my Summit - same dates
we still need @RAM to chime in

Neither the 1993 nor 1993-J box have a date on the bottom of the box.

My guess would be your 1993-J was made before 1931, and your 1993 made after 1931.

Re: Summit 1993 vs: 1993-J
According to Bob’s article (Spring 1999), both the 1993 and 1993J were cataloged from ‘27 to ‘31. The pre-1926 1st version “Summit” (by name only; a NLW raised pillar reel) also came in a jeweled (J) and non-jeweled version. So, presumably, there is or were some non-jeweled 1993 Summit’s out there as well?
Here’s the first “Summit” (with both J and non-J models listed):

The Akron has a similar history. The 1st levelwind version (1926) came in a J and non-J model. Here’s a non-jeweled one:
