Caution When Responding

Post by Brian F. »

We recently had a new member that was contacting several other members through the personal messaging feature of the board, asking if they were interested in buying several reels the new member had "available". Please be very careful when responding to inquiries like these and try not to give out any personal information. This is one reason why we enforce the "no email address in posts" rule and encourage people to use the PM and email feature through the board for people you do not know personally. It is set up for your own protection and security of ORCA's Reel Talk.

The contactees were suspicious because the contacting member joined only the day before and things seemed too easy to have the reels in question fall in their lap. After discovering that another member was contacted about completely different and pretty tough reels, it was decided to use caution and delete the new member. We recently learned about a third member that was contacted about completely different reels but, at this point, it's just confirmation. The new member was removed from the board.

Please remember to use caution and continue to:
Keep email and personal contact information out of posts
Use the email and PM features to communicate with people you don't know.

And, most of all, have fun collecting reels!
Aloha

One of the best reasons to be a dues paying member. The same thing happened to other folks also. Pretty simple - pay your dues and join the club. Dues paying club members make this website possible by paying the bills! It is not free as some people like to think. Pay your dues and join the club. Colby

I'm a dues paying member and I did not know we had the benefit of scam protection. Please elaborate.

There is no explicit scam protection for full ORCA members. I believe Colby was just saying that becoming a member supports our administrators and board in being able to better track legitimate sellers and weed out the fraudsters. The public is welcome but we must be aware that a certain small percentage of scammers will try to take advantage of the goodwill of all.
