Penn Peer 109LH
Gpa liked to fish left handed, and in his old collection we find a Penn Peer 109LH. Can't find other examples of this reel for sale. Is it of interest?? Value? Thanks, Rob

Re: Penn Peer 109LH
The 109 was the first of the Penn level wind reels. It was introduced in 1942 in Right Hand Drive. At the time, Penn offered most of their reels in Right- or Left-hand drive but not the 109. The Model 109 was not offered in Left Hand drive until 1949. Early left-hand drive Penn reels were made by converting Right drive models to Left hand drive. That process was a bit more difficult with the level wind model. But once they figured it out, it was continuously available throughout the life of the model, which was over 60 years. What makes left hand drive reels hard to find is their lower production numbers. Only about 10% of all models made wind up being left hand drive. They can be hard to find, especially when you are looking for old survivors, but they are out there, you just have to keep looking until you find one. Usually when you put a left-hand drive reel for sale, the price is higher than a right-hand drive reel. They are very easy to sell if they are in nice condition because of their scarcity in relation to the standard right-hand reel. Of all the Penn level wind reels, the 109 is the least popular because it has no free spool function. So, because of the low production numbers of a 109LH, there is a possibility that the value of this reel in an online auction could be four or five times the value of a right-hand model.

Having the LH molded into the logo, makes it more desirable. Most of the left-hand models made throughout the history of the 109 model, were identified only on the box or with a sticker on the reel. In terms of a collectible, having the LH molded into the logo makes it more of a keeper. Yours looks like a reel out of the late 1970's.
