Julius fly reel

Post by flysupplies »

Would a Julius 3 1/2 fly reel (nickle rims, star spring on back plate) without any stamping on the front plate signify a trade reel?
Thanks

Sounds like a B Ocean fly reel? Mine has B Ocean marked on the star. Like this one? G( look down this thread)

I'm not sure there is a definitive answer to your question and look forward to replies from those more in the know than myself.

JVH reels can be found with many different seller markings and occasionally with both JVH and seller markings.

I am under the impression (perhaps misguided) that the majority of JVH reels were sold by second party retailers. Since JVH catalogs are so scarce and their reels so abundant in catalogs by A&F, A&I, Mills and others, my assumption has been they made reels predominantly for the trade and sold few factory direct.

Just spit-ballin' here ...all I got is observations.

Dean.

PS - the star washer on the pictured reel needs to be turned so the "U" faces the click switch.

Good catch. The pic is not my reel. I'm guessing some people are afraid to bugger up a stuck endcap to turn the star. The star is turned correct on the reel I just found. I looked hard for any faint stamping but no luck.

I'll second Dean's statements. It may be that any stamping was worn away from use or polishing.
Sometimes the JVH "football " logo was stamped on the front plate at 12 o'clock other times stamped on the back plate at 6 o'clock.
