Portage Cascade Confusion

Post by klonder »

Greeting gents,
Some confusion here with regards to a couple of Enterprise Portage Cascades, raised pillar casting reels. Both reels are the same with the exception of click/ drag configuration, handle grasp and screw head types. The 1916 Enterprise catalogue shows the click and drag configuration, offered in polished nickle or gun metal finish only. No "click only" option.
So I'm confused by the click only version I have. An early version? A frankinreel? Any help most apprieciated. Thanks

I'm suprised at no response. Certainly not high end but they are reels!
Thanks anyways.

No response may mean that nobody has an answer. ;-) One thing that stands out is that there are different handle knbos, which--if both original--may be an indication of age. My guess is that the specs for the reel changed at some point.

Which brings up the issue as to whether the drag was added later or taken away as overkill. Certainly, this is not the only reel that has both check, with drag as an option. The Kentucky style reels come to mind. Many were employed in tournament casting where one or the other function was deemed unnecessary. Even though you would not employ the check during casting, it could come in handy during rewinding of line?

The model with the two rivets on the tailplate probably uses the one-piece drag and click patented in 1914 and described on pg. 26 of my book.
