One in a million hook up

I was fly fishing the Salmon River in Idaho using a wooley bugger with a bead head prince nymph dropper. I had a strike, played the rainbow trout and got ready to release it. To my surprise my prince nymph was hooked to the loop of a snelled hook which was in the trout and not the trout itself! What are the odds?
Years ago I had a similar thing happen fishing for trout in the Manasquan River. My baited hook became hooked on the loop of a snelled hook which was in a trout. I thought that was a once in a lifetime occurrence. Obviously, it can happen more than once!
I would suggest that if you have a fish hooked deeply, it's not bleeding and you wish to release it, clip off as much of the snell or leader as is possible and then release the fish.
