Need help removing handle from reel
I would like to know how to remove the handle from this Shakespeare 1935 Direct O Drive freespool model EH. I have a nice handle to replace the one on it now but can't remove the nut. There must be a trick to it.

Collect mostly Ky style reels; Meek, Heddon, Horton, Pflueger Redifor and Worth, etc.

Have you attempted to un-screw the nut on the end of the drive gear (on the handle). Never worked with one of these but I would try that first. Be mindful of the type of threads (left vs right). If I am all wrong, then maybe someone will join in.Good luck.

I have tried that but it just seems to spin and not loosen up.

Its hard to tell from the pics, but it looks like both the center nut and the larger surface around it have flats for a wrench. If so, then my guess is that you put a wrench on the small center nut, then turn the larger “nut” counterclockwise while holding the small nut stationery.
Or… it might be just the opposite… hold larger nut stationery while turning the small nut counterclockwise

Try John's two-wrench method. If that doesn't work, you may have to keep the spool from turning while you try to unscrew the nut. In that case, it would help to tighten the drag first.it just seems to spin and not loosen up.

Re: Need help removing handle from reel
What you have there is a free spool reel.It works by pushing in that center button called the trip button to put the reel into the free spool mode..It should pop back out when you turn the handle ..It screws onto the trip shaft and has nothing to with holding the handle on..You have to unscrew the hex nut conterclock wise to get the handle off.Try holding the handle and spool while turning the nut..I hope this helps you out...Dick Janak
