Engraved English Fly Reel

Post by Ray Hencken »

When I saw this reel, I had to have it. To me it's not just a reel but a work of art. 3 in diameter, aluminum frame, brass foot, pillars and engraved winding plate.

Good match for a Bill Oyster bamboo rod. He could even match the engraving and colors scheme. Set you back a bit though.

Got a spare reel stamped "Pflueger" or a Montague Imperial?

Great looking reel, Ray. If you aren't sure of the engraver, I'd say it was the work of Frank Conroy - he's a master at his craft.

Have a look at the reels he's done:

Jim, You are correct. The gentleman that sold the reel said that Frank Conroy did the engraving about 20 years ago.

Those are great photos and enlarge on clicking to show the detail of the engraving. I would love to see someone actually doing that in a video. It is pretty amazing work from a talented artist.

His free hand drawing and steady hand carving and etching abilities are pretty darn good!

Here's a little tutorial clip showing how it's done.
