Montague Kosmic Eclipse Effect
Looks like the hard rubber must have shrunk a bit and allowed it to rotate in the German silver frame. Anyone seen this before?

Re: Montague Kosmic Eclipse Effect
I had a JVH raised pillar hard rubber nickle silver reel that I purchased years ago. I stored it in my car overnight on a cold, snowy evening. When I checked it the next morning the hard rubber face plate would rotate in the nickle silver frame. Apparently, the cold caused the rubber to shrink slightly. When the reel was at a warmer room temperature the face plate did not move.
That may be what happened to this reel. Perhaps placing the reel in a freezer for a day might cause the hard rubber to shrink so that the face plate could be rotated back to its original position. Then allow the reel to return to room temperature.
EvH pinned the nickle silver rims to the hard rubber which would prevent this from occurring.

I have the same reel stamped The Kosmic Reel J.B. CROOK & Co. N.Y. which also has the crank somewhat misaligned. Picture attached.
I haven't tried the cold treatment with this reel to try to change the position of the hard rubber in the frame.

If it turns like that, then either no pins or they fell out ( that should be obvious). So, what is holding the face plate in? Seems that the whole face should then come out unless spindle is stuck. Nothing happening with the back side?

It looks to me like the hard rubber is a shrink-fit insertion or a press-fit insertion into the end frames. There is a small flange on the hard rubber visible on the outside of the end frames, but not on the inside. Here's photos of another Montague Kosmic reel. I don't think the hard rubber was cast into the frame because there's no sign of cleanup maching.

The immortal words of John Kopf give a hint as to how it's done:
"The plate or head A is also recessed on its outer side, so as to form a projecting circular rim or bezel, c, within which is fitted a panel, H., of vulcanite, or other material of a contrasting color and appearance, the edge of the panel being covered by the rim or bezel and a neat finish thereby afforded...I prefer to form the plate or head by striking it up with dies or by spinning, in which case the rim or bezel c will only require a slight turning or finishing to make a sharp corner and edge adapted to hold the panel H. The panel may be securely held in place by the bezel c, or by the nut, or by both said means."
