Home Reel Displays

Post by Paul Roberts »

Recently, Richard Lodge posted a photo of a nice display he has in his home of period reels and associated items. A lovely and interesting display, I thought. I'm sure there are many such displays in homes, offices, man caves and she sheds all over. Would be neat to see some of what people have done with their reels. My modern workhorse reels are stashed away out of sight in reel cases. But my old reels -at least the one's I like most and will be fishing with- are behind glass or on shelves, to view as well as pluck for a fishing or casting outing. So, here are a few pics of... what I've done with some of my old reels:

This shelf pays homage to my dad's side of the family that includes my grandfather's "bass reel" -a '40's Bronson Mercury- some of his lures and other memorabilia. The jumping bass is a rock painting my father did and gave to me at Christmas in 1973, representing a strike he witnessed on his own dad's jitterbug, or his memory of it; I notice it's a spotted frog pattern rather than the green back silver scale finish the plug actually is (foreground). :)

Next is a continuation of the same shelf, of some memorabilia of important fishing partners, including my son and some flies and a bass sculpture he gifted me years ago. One photo is of my son on a trip he and I took when I (and he!) were teaching aquatic resources and angling at a forest reserve. He got to drive that John Deere Gator all over that 1500acre property. You probably can't quite make out that enormous smile on his face. I sure miss my bud. The bass reels are SB 1200 (1920's), Pflueger 1576, with jumping bass relief (early '60's), and a Shimano Bantam Mag, my first bass casting reel (mid-'80's).

Lastly are some large reels I collected up in anticipation of moving to the salt. Plans changed and we have landed in big Esocid country. So... the shelf is a good place to stash some of that paraphernalia, and to remind me that those beasts are just down the road! The spinning reel is a Quick 440N that had lost its jumping trout plate. So, I replaced it with a more appropriate one! Conventional reels are: OC Jones Beach, OC Seal Beach, Shakespeare Hercules, Pflueger Bond, Coxe 65C, and Pflueger Rocket. Oh yes, my Dad did the pike painting too, for an article on pike in a magazine.

Wouldn't take too long nor would you wander very far!
A one bed, 750 sf apartment. A quick glance would be more like it!

Then that’s 750sf of interesting! :)

You must be in the NE US? I see brook trout and Denton’s Ouanniche (if I remember right) illustration. I’ve caught a few of those in Cayuga Lake.

Yes indeed, although kinda in between. Not quite NE and not quite Mid Atlantic but decidedly unique! Yo from Jersey! It's not the end of the world but you can see the end of the world from here🙂

Yes, very cool display. Love all the lures too! The only issue I see with having too many fly reels is... it could be darn costly putting lines on them all. I guess a line winder would be a must have. Reminds me of when I made archery self-bows. Each were fun to make. But then each needed a set of hand-made wood arrows to match. The real work is in the arrows. :bricks:

And some questions:
-Some of those lures are not all that old. Do some have stories behind them?
-Your Luxor's: Are they quiet or grindy sounding when reeled? I don't have many straight bevel geared reels but the ones I do have a fair amount of gear buzz. Any of yours quiet?

Paul, the lures are just there to add color to an otherwise monochromatic display. And some of the Luxors do make gear noise, but I do have one that it quiet.

Some "family" tackle.
Apparently, my pop, before marriage/etc., was a plug man although he didn't leave behind any casting rods/reels.

My best research effort.

I know he fly fished the Paradise Creek near Henryville in PA's Poconos after, marriage/me, and was a wetfly/small streamer man judging by the flies, tying materials and rods left behind. Though I had compiled list of the fly rod lures but it is lost in the ozone for the moment. Some Heddons in there.

Edit: Found my listing of the flyrod lures. Additions/corrections are always welcome.

Some decent lures in there. The flyrod Dingbats are nice. I think you know that the Jitterbugs with the plastic lips are the WWII lures, when metal was directed to wartime. They are not rare, but pretty scarce and desirable.

Very nice! What is the golden creel shown, is it a medal or just an art piece? Also curious about the micrometer. I know tourney casters used them to measure diameter of line for rule compliance.

Wow. So cool to see all these home displays. Just lovely. And did I say cool too! :)

I immediately began naming the old plugs before seeing your list, and doing pretty well. Don't get me started down that road!

Dean... just WOW.

Matt,

The Leonard micrometer is for measuring rod tapers, tippets and leaders.

As you mentioned, micrometers were also used for measuring tournament casting line, as this one no doubt was.

The brass creel is a pocket ashtray. They are almost always described as a match safe, but matches don't fit.

Dean.

ps Paul, thank you !
