Pflueger Capitol 1989 Older model?

Post by aok »

Recently acquired the reel. When I do a search only find what I think is the newer version.
Anyone have a idea when this was made?
Thanks

Introduced in 1936 and made until ~1960. You may want to check the ORCA library for available Pflueger catalogs for details.

The 1937 Pflueger catalog is the first to show the pushbutton freespool release and auto engagement.

Got a spare reel stamped "Pflueger" or a Montague Imperial?

Thanks for the information.
Went through a number of the older Pflueger catalogs and from what I saw ,it may have been a 30's model.
It still needs to be cleaned up but seems to operate ok.

They are pretty solid reels. There are a few posts and tutorials on Alan Tani (alantani.com) that should be helpful.

The only "tricky" piece might be the FS clutch. There is a mouse-trap like spring under it. Doable, but I found that on some I could clean beneath one without fully disassembling it. I believe I discuss this in an AT thread on the Capitol 1985.

If it has a hard rubber door knob or cabinet/drawer pull shaped handle knob, then it's pre 1940 for sure. The torpedo knob showed up later.

It was fairly clean so for now put it back together. I found a good utube video for the newer style.
Mine does not have the free spool release button
