Orvis 1874 Patent Reel Article by Jim Schottenham

Post by RonG »

Jim has an interesting article about the history of the Manhattan Brass and Manufacturing Company and their manufacture of the early Orvis fly reels that is included in the Summer, 2024 "The American Fly Fisher" magazine.

Jim Schottenham, a past ORCA president and currently the curator the American Museum of Fly Fishing, did some great detective work in firmly establishing that Manhattan Brass and M'fg Co. was manufacturing the 1874 patent perforated fly reels for Orvis circa 1875. The photographs and documents that accompany the article are excellent.

The article is titled "Reel Revelations: The Manhattan Brass and Manufacturing Company and the Orvis Patent Reel." and is four pages in length with sources detailed in the endnotes. The seminal discussion regarding Paul W. Ovis, Charles F. Orvis' nephew, was enlightening. Thanks, Jim, great job as usual.
