Possibly the mother of all flea market finds... I need some info on this O. Zwarg reel (seems to be 600 yd) and the signed Nickels shrimp (?)... I won't even go into what I had to leave behind...
Oh my... (sorry for the yucky pictures I have not cleaned anything yet)
Great find El! I'm a glutton for punishment, please do tell what you left behind.
Certainly looks to be the reel deal. Don't know very much about Zwargs but I am wondering about the extra screws on the headplate. Hmm, some of those big ol' Pfluegers I have might be loosening off of the shelf if a trade is in the air down the road...
"I don't know nuttin' about no O. Zwargs..." (so any info. or value would be appriciated)
Brian, I know this may make you sick but the near coffee table sized Pflueger shipping crate was among the items left behind... two mint with shipping crate vintage outboards... a wide assortment of minnow traps... assorted other lures and reels, bamboo rods, rod cases... bait buckets, duck decoys, a huge number of shotgun and powder wood shipping crates, old and vintage shot shell boxes, coffee table sized Western clay targets shipping crate, bobbers, hatchets, traps, I stopped looking close after I took custody of the Zwarg and the Nickels shrimp... I just couldn't look any more as the Pflueger crate was more than I could carry...
hey, El...pic is showing as postage stamp size for me...can you make it bigger? Can't see much, but likely the handle has been changed out...don't think Z used taht "football" style knob on his reels. Nice score, regardless...what size be it?
I just have to wonder what the vendors of that "Aladins cave" booth left back at home...
There were things just in heaps... lures, reels (the Zwarg was in a heap of other reels), duck calls... some nice antler carved ones... Antique shotgun shells and paper boxes, wooden crates of all discriptions, reels in boxes (no I checked them pretty well...), but I barely gave the lures a look... the Nickels shrimp just happened to be on top... and I thought it had a nice folksy look to it... everything from bobbers and boxes of hooks to outboards. Tackleboxes, bait buckets, antique beer stuff...Oh there was a blacksmiths anvil and tools I really liked... I even left the Lawrence fishing outfit in the box behind... My head was starting to swim...
I will have to save up and go the next time that trade days market is there...(hope these folks are there again) now the surprising part is that I was nearly in the back yard of another collector that would have spotted this stuff too... he must been outa town.
I see one that is almost a ringer for it on M. Echols' antique reel web site... from looking at the work on it I am thinking it is original to the piece-little piece on inside fits just "so". And because the screws don't even look turned on it overall... but as I said I don't know a thing about a Zwarg...
I'm not sure how to make the photo bigger... with the size of the file limitations... maybe Brian can stop crying over the Pflueger crate and give me a pointer on how to make it larger.
I was going to say that I've seen those torpedo shaped knobs on Zwargs and EVHs too.
El, are you talking about the spring thingy mounted on the backside of the handle that pins into the perforations on the star drag. If it is, what do you call that thing anyway? If it's not the same thing you're talking about, please explain.
El...that's more like it! What a sweet find! I think I'd be cruising back to look over the bare ground where he set up, in hopes of finding an arifact or two! And the handle certainly looks original, so glad to hear that Brian has seen that style knob... all I remember seeing had the straight knobs. I assume that's probably 6/0 size? what's the sideplate diameter?
Also, as Brian indicated, that reel has additional screws in the middle of the head plate relative to my 4/0...must ba additional mechanics going on inside there...nothing to indicate it's other than factory, but would be interesting to know what's going on...I'm sure that there are several mavens reading this that could quickly answer that.
Nice find. Your reel looks a lot like the large reel pictured in Norm Pinardi's article on Zwarg Reels in Fishing Collectibles Magazine, including the football handle. Nifty article, if you need a copy drop me a note.
