OK to peddle/give away past Newsletters?

Post by JoeW »

I keep finding back issues tucked away! I've copied or I'm keeping articles of interest to me and would like to see these go to a new or more recent ORCA member for his pleasure. I know some organizations have very strict rules about reselling their publications. Man- there's some very interesting stuff here~ Thanks for the advice. Best---- Joe Walkowski (WNYTC ORCA)

Joe, they make great recruiting tools. You can give them out to young collectors and also, spread them around waiting rooms. I have put many in hospital waiting rooms and they don’t stay long. Someone must think they are pretty interesting… and you are not likely to make much more than shipping cost in a sale, MHO.

Hi John— Thanks for the reply. Don’t get me wrong, though. Like you and other ORCA people, I think information should be given out freely, not sold! I was hoping maybe some new collectors would like some. I was going to ask maybe a buck an issue just to discourage someone from grabbing them and reselling for profit.

I don’t think my doctor, dentist, etc. would want people just dumping reading material in their offices. I don’t think they’d want to have to monitor what was brought in!

I like the idea of giving them out at shows! I don’t go to many, but maybe I’ll just put out the pile at our next local tackle show! Two per person. We get a real good public turnout. Who knows, It may even broaden the horizons of some other lure collectors!

Well, thanks again for the input. I just don’t like the idea of tossing them all out- too much good info and photography in them! Best—— Joe Walkowski (WNYTC ORCA)

I live in a coastal city that has a number of those "Little Libraries" in locations where people put and take books and magazines. I often put back issues into the Little Library along the waterfront and they are always gone within a few days.

Ha ha! Another great idea! We have a couple of those free libraries in town here! Plus it's a place where I can get rid of some old fishing/hunting/outdoor books I've had laying around for years! They're "showing age" but heck- for free- someone will want to read them!

And I just thought- we have a couple big Antique Malls down the road. They have a rack of antique stores, "where to visit", brochures, etc. I'm sure some antiquers will pick them up!

And my wife has a dentist appt next week- I'll ask her leave a couple of the Newsletters in the waiting room. Doc's a good guy- he even fishes! He'll probably grab one!

Then give out what's left at a show! Just think-a couple days ago I didn't know what to do with them!

Just had a thought- should I black out my name and address off the newsletters before I go giving them to the public? Might be a good idea, I'm thinking.

Great chances to pay it forward! Thanks for all the thoughts gentlemen! Best---- Joe Walkowski (ORCA)

We recycle everything we possibly can or are allowed to. My wife spent the last 30 years working in banking mortgage. She's had an awful lot of identity theft training. One thing she's adamant about is that anything with our names or address on it gets them removed before they get recycled. All personal information then gets shredded. She has personally seen more identity theft than I ever thought was possible.
Love those Open Face Spinning Reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco)

Yea, Tommy-- I'm going to go with that. I'll black out my name/address with marker. All it takes is to have your ID stolen ONCE to make you very gun shy! Quite a few years ago, I was green and thought all emails were legit. Got one I thought was from an auction site. I replied. Well... it wasn't! Few days later, I got an email from my bank asking if I had made a recent Credit Card purchase for $600 worth of electronics! Heck NO! They cancelled payment and put a hold on my card. I had to change my account PIN's, passwords, sign ins, etc on everything! Took me weeks to get everything switched over. Thank heavens my bank keeps close watch on "odd" charges! I even changed my "Tackle Wanted" hobby card to just include my phone number and I never invite strangers in my house to show me old tackle- I go see them!

Daughter once had her CC number stolen by a gas station attendant. They caught him when he made a BIG down payment on a used Mercedes at a dealership 300 miles away!

At any rate-- I really don't want a bunch of strangers with my address and knowing that I probably have a collection of old and valuable reels (which I don't!). They be lined up parked down the street waiting to see no one at home!

Shame, but that's the way things are in this modern electronic age! Thanks for thumping me on the head and reminding me! Best---- Joe Walkowski (ORCA)

Followup- Went out to an antique mall last weekend. Asked the owner if it was OK to put out some antique reel collectors club newsletters. he rook a look and said "sure". He had a mag rack with flyers from antique shops. I left 5. Shopped around- no finds. But on the way out, I saw the owner pretty seriously looking at one of the Mags! Maybe at least one new collector?

And hey-- All you good people here at ORCA have a Happy Thanksgiving! The horde is about to descend here!

Somebody likes old reels! Went back to that antique mall a month ago- all five mags were gone! But I hadn't thought to take any more along :bash: ! I gotta block off the addresses on another bunch and keep them in the car.

I also went out to a bigger antique mall and dropped off four more mags! I'll let you know next time I make the two hour drive there. I like doing this- nice to "recycle" them and know someone is going to enjoy looking at them again!

Thanks again for the ideas! Best---- Joe Walkowski (WNYTC ORCA)

I tripped over a box of Reel News this AM and another filled with Fine Woodworking! I grumble and put them out heading for recyclce and it’s trash day. However, i couldn’t bring myself to toss them in the bin! But i will have to do something… i’m drowning in my own detritus! And yes, it’s all on line but there is still a certain charm in being able to thumb thru A hard copy !

I ran into an old friend at a fishing flea market here in PA and learned that he collects old fly reels. I told him about the ORCA convention this fall in Gettysburg, and sent him a couple of issues with the Pflueger Progress articles that I wrote and an ORCA membership application. Hope we get a new member!
